So when Calderdale Council needed to replace four tired tree benches in the heart of Halifax town centre, we were proud to take on the challenge – designing, building, and installing four bespoke octagonal benches at the Woolshops shopping centre. But these aren’t just any benches. They’re made from 100% British recycled plastic, with each telling a story of Halifax’s weaving heritage.

Naturally, recycled plastic was the perfect material for the job. But this project was about more than durability… It gave us a chance to do something a little bit special.
Four Benches, Eight Sections, One Clear Message
Each of the four ‘tree benches’ was a bespoke octagonal take on our Calverley tree seat – a unique design you’ll only find at British Recycled Plastic. Built from eight individual sections at our workshop and bolted together on site, they wrap neatly around the fully-grown trees. Installing them somewhere as familiar as the Woolshops – a shopping centre the team knows and loves – made the whole project feel all the more meaningful.
We offer many of our products in a range of colours, including options to mix ‘n’ match. For this project, we wanted the tree benches to look warm and inviting in all weathers. We opted for a varied, earthy palette of black, brown, grey, and beige recycled plastic boards, combined in different arrangements across the four benches. The result is a set that feels connected but not identical — each bench has its own subtle character, sitting comfortably within Halifax’s historic high street.
A Nod to Halifax’s Weaving Heritage
As well as a unique colour scheme, we engraved phrases into the recycled plastic of seats themselves, which were inspired by Halifax’s rich textile history during the industrial revolution. Some examples include:

Every one of them is an idiom born on the factory floors and in the mills of Britain’s weaving towns; language shaped by the industry that shaped Halifax itself. Anyone who stops for a rest at the Woolshops now takes a small piece of local history home with them.

With the recycled plastic bench sections complete, the next job was installation. Working around a busy town centre setting means taking an extra careful approach to your surroundings, so our team took the work at a steady and precise pace – one bench per day, over four days.
Section by section, each octagonal seat was assembled around its tree until all four were in place. It’s the kind of on-site work where experience really shows: getting the fit right the first time, keeping the site tidy, and leaving the finished piece looking exactly as it should.
