One of the best features of our recycled plastic lumber is its sheer versatility, and we always love to see the self-build projects that our customers come up with. As a highly durable and sustainable alternative to traditional building materials such as wood or metal, our lumber can be used for almost limitless applications.

Many of our customers opt for recycled plastic lumber because of its longevity, and the fact that it will need no maintenance or treatment to keep it looking as good as the day it was installed. Factor in the total-life financial savings compared to wood – which will inevitably degrade over a few years – and it really becomes a no-brainer.

Got a home garden project in mind? Our lumber is incredibly easy to work with and can be used for a range of purposes in domestic gardens.

Laying the lumber base

Take a look at this self-build project from our customer Evan in Yorkshire. Recently retired, Evan was keen to give his somewhat neglected back garden a major overhaul. He told us:

“The back garden just looked like a wreck. And it had done for the twelve years since we moved in. We have horses and stables and I was working full time until last April, so there hadn’t been time to do do this garden project justice really, because I knew it was going to be a long job.

“So I just took loads of time to think about it and how I wanted it to look, We discussed all sorts of options, like re-lawning the back garden, but I hate cutting grass! So we considered artificial lawn, we almost went down that route, but once I found plastic I thought this is going to give it more of a modern look. I wanted a clean, uncluttered look.”

Once Evan had his specifications for the job all drawn up, he contacted us to discuss the requirements for the project. He used our rectangular and square profile lumber to construct a base for the upper decking, adding some bespoke raised beds to line the inside perimeter of his fence.

“Everything came through the house, because we live in a barn conversion, but it’s a long barn building, so there’s actually three big houses in one long barn. The way it’s built means that we’re the only house that doesn’t have independent access to our back garden so everything to the garden has to come through the house.

“Luckily we’ve got a great big patio, windows and doors, front and back. It’s all open plan with big windows, so I was actually able to put down dust sheets and everything could come through the house quite easily. And – luckily – the first half of this year we’ve had hardly any rain, so actually there was no problem with mud or anything like that.”

Adding raised beds

Our pre-cut raised bed kits come in a range of heights and sizes to suit individual needs, but that doesn’t mean custom requirements can’t be met by our team. Evan’s bespoke raised beds were cut to his own exacting specification to perfectly fit around the inside of his fence, and the installation job went without a hitch.

“The raised beds went together really well. I gave very precise measurements, and in hindsight I thought maybe I shouldn’t have given them a quite such precise measurements – like 8.43 metres along the back between the fences  – so it had to fit absolutely perfectly. If it was even slightly bigger it wasn’t going to fit at all. But to their the credit the workshop cut it absolutely perfectly so that it literally slotted in. You couldn’t get a razor blade in between it – just fantastic.”

The longevity of recycled plastic lumber

As with many of customers, Evan opted for recycled plastic lumber over more traditional materials as it will last for many years without needing regular upkeep or replacement. He told us:

“I chose the lumber for its longevity and the fact that it’s recycled plastic, so happy days for environment. Plus, it’s very easy to work with. The idea was it’s all going to be so long lasting that it will see me out, and probably see the next people in this house out, because it’s likely to last for a very long time. As long as it’s kept in good order, there’s no reason why it won’t last decades.”

It’s always great to see our customers’ lumber builds come to fruition, and we were happy to be involved with such a well planned project. As you can see from the pics, the finished job looks great. Evan was very satisfied with the service he received from British Recycled Plastic, too – so a great job all round!

“It’s been a pleasure to work with you. The staff were very professional in making sure that all the lumber dimensions and the quantities and everything were properly worked out. It actually saved me money. You guys have done everything you could to make it both as affordable and straightforward as possible.”
