We firmly believe there’s room for everyone at the table here at BRP, so it’s always gratifying to see our products being used to create an inclusive space. A couple of our recent customers have done exactly that, and we’re proud to have been part of their plans. Diversity makes our communities stronger, and we’re always keen to contribute to a world where everybody can occupy the same space without fear of exclusion.
Feeling good at One Fylde
Charity organisation One Fylde is doing great work across the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre areas, providing support, accommodation and activities for adults and young people with learning disabilities. The community group, which currently supports more than 230 people, contacted us when it was looking to add some accessible furniture to its outdoor area.
They opted for three of our Batley Walkthrough picnic tables, an excellent choice for a fully inclusive space. The Batley is similar in looks to our classic Denholme picnic table, but its innovative X-frame design means users can walk straight into their seat without having to swing a leg over a bench – ideal for anyone that may be a little unsteady on their feet.
The tables have proved to be a welcome addition to One Fylde’s outdoor area, helping to make it welcoming and inclusive. Helen from One Fylde told us:
“Everyone is really happy with the benches, we’re using them a lot. We have two in our garden area at the back of the site, and another at the side of the building. They’re well used, very sturdy, and should last us for years.”
And as our products will never rot, split or splinter, the tables will provide decades of service without the need for maintenance or treatment of any kind. The staff at One Fylde sent us some fantastic pictures of the inclusive seating being enjoyed – it was great to see smiles all round!
Inclusive garden at St George’s Hospital
As well as the Batley and our wider accessibility range – specifically developed for users with a range of mobility needs – our standard outdoor furniture can always be used to make a shared space more comfortable and welcoming.
The Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust recently contacted us about outdoor furniture for St George’s Hospital in Stafford. The facility supports older people with a range of mental health issues, and its shared garden is much loved as it provides a calm and peaceful space for patients and staff. We spoke to Tracy Thomas, Quality Matron for Older People’s Services at St George’s, who explained:
“We have two older adult wards here, one specialises in dementia care and the other one functional illness, so we have older adults admitted to us that can be quite physically unwell as well as mentally unwell. We’ve put a lot of money into the garden over the years, just because it’s a space where patients can escape the hospital environment and have their families come and visit them. So, it’s really important that this is a nice area.
“We were looking into some new benches, as ours were looking very tired. We’re quite big on sustainability within the Trust, and always looking at ways in which we can increase our sustainability and be more efficient in that respect. So we really liked that your products utilise plastic that would have ended up in landfill.”
The team ordered four of our Harewood benches in brown, and one with rainbow slats to add an extra splash of colour to the outdoor area. Now in situ, the benches have been a big hit with the patients and – as well as helping to create a fully inclusive space – they’ll certainly save the staff time and money. Tracey commented:
“What’s great about these benches is that they should last a lifetime and we don’t need to worry about the upkeep. A lot of resources went into replacing our previous garden furniture every few years, and that was costing a lot of money. So it made sense to invest in something a little bit more expensive that would save us money in the long run and last for many years.”
