The Hebden X-Grid is one of our hardest working products – a 100% recycled plastic, permeable paving system that provides a highly durable surface for private driveways and pathways to ensure ground reinforcement. Quick and simple to install, the X-Grid is perfect for creating sustainable surfaces that will last for decades.

As well as being zero-maintenance, environmentally friendly and incredibly easy to work with, the X-Grid is also SuDS-approved, so no planning permission is required for private properties. And if your pathway is in a public area, you’ll also be glad to hear that the grids are fully compliant with Part M of the Building Regulations, which requires the provision of a solid surface, suitable for wheelchair access.

Lightweight and easy to handle, the grids weigh under 5kg per square metre and feature integral slot and peg connections which allow one person to install up to 100 square metres in just a few hours. They can be filled with a number of different materials including loose gravel, resin-bound gravel, grass or tree bark, so they blend unobtrusively and elegantly into private homes and rural areas while maintaining extraordinary load-bearing capabilities. Sounds like a winner all round, right?

The X-Grid in action

One of the very best features of the gravel X-Grid for ground reinforcement is its versatility – from car parks and domestic driveways to access routes and public pathways, the possibilities for its application are almost endless. Let’s take a look at some examples from our customers.

Alan Dunlop, of A. Dunlop Landscapes, recently used the grids for a domestic driveway installation on a property in Ayr, Scotland, with excellent results.

Alan commented:

“First time we’ve used the Hebden X-Grid and have to say it is a fantastic product. It gives the driveway a very firm, even finish and will hold the decorative stones in place over time.

“Another huge transformation here at this circa 1860 Victorian Sandstone Villa, and very much looking forward to installing the Victorian Mosaic tiles to the new pathway and terrace when they’re made up. Once again, our clients are very happy with the finished works.”

Another customer, Richard Cox, came to us when he was looking to completely overhaul his own driveway at home in Woking. He told us:

“After months of research I wanted an approach which was eco-friendly and cost-effective, but we were not prepared to compromise on the high-end finish for our contemporary project.

“The process to lay the grids was very easy and surprisingly fast, even with two radius and two drains – I completed 95 square meters comfortably on my own in 3/4 of a day. I used a hand saw to cut through most of the grids which was very easy, and a battery jigsaw for a couple of the radius cuts which was obviously faster.”

“We went for a 14mm angular granite gravel, which has given us a good visual result as the stones are small enough to look quite smooth, yet they do not get stuck in tyres.

“We were also worried about gravel migrating to the lawn or onto the road, but so far the grids seem to keep the gravel secure and we have had no issues at all.”

“The gravel grids are completely porous, so created no issues with drainage or water run-off. They are recycled and produced in the UK, which was a huge plus for us, and the speed at which we could complete the project was amazing – nothing else we found could be completed and driven on in the same day once you have done the groundwork (Landscape fabric, Type 1 sub-base 100mm-150mm, Weed membrane, Building Sand, Gravel Grid).

“We are very happy with the grids and the final result is absolutely superb. We have had several comments from visitors and neighbours who are genuinely considering doing the same and who would not have considered gravel before, as the experience with most gravel drives is that you sink into them and they are difficult to walk on. With our driveway it feels solid under foot even with heels or on bikes.

“I would highly recommend this approach and these grids to anyone, and we are really happy to support British businesses and promote eco-friendly approaches to home improvement.”

We mentioned the versatility of the X-Grid – take a look at this innovative build from our customer Ben Davis. Ben lives in the hills of Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire (BRP’s neck of the woods!), and wanted to build a shelter that would sit well in the local landscape, so used the grids to create a ‘living roof’.

Ben told us:

“We built a shelter for camping and playing in and wanted it to blend in to the background, which it will do as it weathers in. A big part of that is the green roof which I have planted up with wild flowers. The whole field is being re-wilded, as we keep livestock and encourage wildlife.

“The roof has a lining, polyester carpet, to retain moisture and finally the BRP Hebden X-Grids to retain the soil. The Hebden X-Grids have been perfect for what I wanted to do with the green roof, especially as the roof is on a slope. BRP was extremely helpful. Highly recommended.”

The X-Grid in summary

• Reinforces ground prone to potholing and slippage. Great for gateways and tracks – anywhere you have to regularly backfill with hardcore.

• Highly versatile – suitable for domestic driveways, car parks, public pathways, and much more.

• Improves drainage and reduces surface water. The honeycombed structure of the X-Grids draws excess water down, holding it below the surface until it can be reabsorbed by the ground.

• Can be filled with either gravel or topsoil (which can then be seeded with grass).

• Support a large amount of weight, including most UK roadgoing vehicles.

• A Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) that does not require planning permission for domestic driveways.

• Easy and fast to lay.
