This week, we have a guest blog from our friends at Luttons Parish Council in North Yorkshire. The councillors were keen to replace some old wooden benches with our recycled plastic products, specifically placing the benches to encourage physical activity and support mental well-being – so we like to think of these as happy Harewood benches!

It’s always gratifying to see our products being used in such a positive way, and we feel privileged to offer outdoor furniture that can enrich and improve people’s lives. We may be a little biased given that it’s our neck of the woods, but Yorkshire truly is one of the most beautiful regions of the UK with lush, rolling hills and captivating views. We’re confident that the Harewood benches will bring enjoyment to Luttons locals and visitors for many years to come.

Harewood benches in the Yorkshire Wolds

Luttons Parish Council member Phil Burrell writes:

A unique part of Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Wolds is a distinctive and special landscape with a history and culture of its own. Home to rolling chalk valleys, stunning wildlife, vibrant market towns and ancient villages, the area has inspired great artists such as David Hockney and the poet and novelist Alfred J Brown.

The villages of West Lutton, East Lutton and Helperthorpe, which form the Luttons Parish, all lie within The Great Wolds Valley and sit upon the extraordinary Gypsey Race, a winterbourne stream that is the most northerly of the Yorkshire chalk streams and which often vanishes underground in the porous chalk of the area.

As part of their effort to make improvements for the community and for visitors to the area, the Luttons Parish Council has established a programme of community bench replacement and the siting of new benches along footpaths and cycling routes.

Rather than adopting a simple like-for-like replacement of the old and unsalvageable existing wooden benches with new wooden benches that would deteriorate and become unusable over time, the Luttons Parish Councillors were keen to move to recycled plastic benches that were manufactured in the United Kingdom from British waste.

British Recycled Plastic offered an ideal solution. They are an independently owned British business based in Yorkshire that manufacture superb, maintenance-free benches that are made from 100% recycled material and that are fully recyclable themselves.

John Wane, the Chair of the Luttons Parish Council, said: “I was delighted that we were able to engage with British Recycled Plastic to provide the benches for our Parish. Not only are the benches durable and will never rot or splinter, they offer a positive environmental contribution and they are made in Yorkshire!”

The siting of the benches is aimed to encourage physical activity and to support mental well-being. At the time of writing, the Luttons Parish Council has procured and installed four Harewood style benches from British Recycled Plastic.

Three of the benches have been positioned within or around West Lutton, while the fourth is in East Lutton. A fifth bench will be installed as a replacement bench to the west of Helperthorpe on the National Cycle Network Route 166, a Sustrans regional route in the Yorkshire Wolds. Further benches will be replaced and installed as part of a forward rolling improvement programme by the Parish Council.

Martin Pearce, the Chair of the Parish Council Environmental Working Group, stated: “In selecting the location of each of our five Harewood Benches from British Recycled Plastic, we wanted to choose spots that would encourage members of the community to engage in physical activity safe in the knowledge that there would be somewhere comfortable to rest for a while and to take in some of the stunning views of our local area.

“The bench at the top of the Sheepwalk Lane overlooking West Lutton offers particularly stunning views along our valley and beyond. Knowing that, once installed, the British Recycled Plastic Harewood benches not only look attractive, fit well with their surroundings, are maintenance free and are environmentally friendly, fulfilled all of our Parish Council key requirements given our strong focus on community, the environment and on sustainability”.

Of course, as it is chemically inert, it can be washed as often as wanted, with bleach, disinfectant or any other regular cleaning product.

Our role in the world of recycling is helping to reduce domestic waste and create products which are useful, long lasting and beautiful.
