Community Spirit in Action: Recycled Plastic Benches at York Cricket Club

When it comes to grassroots sport, it’s the passion of the people that truly powers a club forward. That spirit is alive and well at York Cricket Club in Yorkshire, where an inspiring, community-led initiative resulted in the installation of durable, recycled plastic benches — built to last and built from 100% recycled material.

Why York Cricket Club Chose Recycled Plastic

This welcoming amateur club needed to replace its old, weather-worn wooden seating. Rather than rely on external funding, the club turned to its members and supporters. The idea was simple but powerful: sponsor a recycled plastic bench, and receive a personalised plaque as a lasting thank-you.

The result? A full row of Ilkley slatted benches, stylish and practical, now lines the cricket pitch — a clear example of what can be achieved when a community comes together.

Rob Flack said:

We took the decision to replace these benches with the BRP Ilkley benches as we wanted a design that looks like a traditional bench and we wanted arms (old cricketers need support to get up from benches!.)

York CC replaced five of their wooden benches, all of which were donated in memory of former players and supporters. All of these benches are in front of the red brick wall close to the scoreboard and are a popular place for spectators to sit.

Rob said: “Over the next couple of years, we intend to replace many more of our benches, using the British Recycled Plastic Ilkley bench. Our members and supporters are interested in dedicating them to former players and family members.

We chose British Recycled Plastic products as they have very long warranties, are very easy to maintain, they are very sturdy and they look great”

The Benefits of Choosing Recycled Plastic Benches

These aren’t just any benches. Made from artificial lumber, a robust alternative to timber, these recycled plastic benches offer a host of benefits:

  • Rot-proof and splinter-free
  • No painting, staining, or treatment required
  • UV-stable — won’t fade or crack in the sun
  • Designed to endure all seasons
  • Backed by a 25-year guarantee

By switching to recycled plastic, York Cricket Club invested in long-term, low-maintenance seating that will serve the club for decades — no upkeep needed.

Seating That’s Good for the Planet — and the Community

Every recycled plastic bench used at York Cricket Club supports the environment. These sustainable benches reduce landfill waste, reuse valuable plastic, and promote sustainable choices at the local level.

More than that, this is seating with meaning — community-funded, community-built, and used every day by players, supporters, and visitors alike. These are plastic memorial benches with a heart.

A Blueprint for Clubs Across the UK

York Cricket Club’s smart, sustainable seating project is a brilliant example of what other sports clubs, schools, and public spaces can achieve. By using recycled plastic, they’ve:

  • Saved money on future maintenance
  • Boosted community pride and involvement
  • Invested in a greener future
