Accessible Outdoor Furniture in Action: Recycled Plastic Benches at Wells Cole Community Centre

The use of recycled accessible benches in the reopening of the Wells Cole Community Centre garden shows how thoughtful design can make outdoor spaces more inclusive. Inspired by a local resident’s efforts to improve access, the project introduced wheelchair-friendly paths, accessible paving and durable recycled plastic seating. With three York benches at its centre, the garden now offers a welcoming, low-maintenance space where residents can rest, socialise and enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Table of Contents

  • The garden at Wells Cole Community Centre was redesigned to improve accessibility.
  • The project was inspired by a local resident who recognised the need for easier-to-reach seating.
  • Three accessible benches were installed around a wheelchair-friendly paved area.
  • Wide, level paths make the space easier to use for wheelchair users and people with mobility aids.
  • Recycled plastic accessible benches were chosen because they’re weatherproof, durable and maintenance-free.
  • The result is a practical community garden designed for rest, social connection and year-round enjoyment.

At British Recycled Plastic, we’re always proud to see how our products become a part of meaningful community spaces. The recent reopening of the Wells Cole Community Centre garden, based in Saham Toney, Norfolk, has been the perfect opportunity to see our accessible benches in action.

Local resident Margaret Robins was inspired to act after helping an elderly gentleman struggling to reach a bench near the Community Centre. That encounter brought a wider issue to light: the need for safe, accessible outdoor seating at the Community Centre for those who need it most.

With the power of hard work, community organisation, and our recycled plastic, accessible benches, Wells Cole Community Centre now has a welcoming, wheelchair-friendly garden designed with accessibility and ease in mind.

An Outdoor Space Designed for Everyone

With the help of our York benches, the Wells Cole Community Centre has been transformed. The new outdoor seating area centres around a fully wheelchair-accessible paved square, conveniently located near the disabled parking area. Wide, smooth pathways ensure easy navigation for wheelchair users, those with walkers, and anyone who may find uneven ground challenging.

At the heart of the space are three of our engraved York benches, carefully positioned to create a spacious seating area for at least nine people. The York accessible benches provide a comfortable place to rest, chat, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings found in the beautiful village of Saham Toney.

Importantly, the design allows space for wheelchairs and mobility aids alongside the seating – something that’s often overlooked, but makes all the difference in creating a truly inclusive social space.

Low-Maintenance, High-Impact Landscaping

The garden itself has been designed to be as simple and low-maintenance as possible, while keeping its uncluttered, tranquil appearance. Four Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ trees stand in the corners, creating a peaceful nature setting that changes with the seasons – and can be enjoyed year-round thanks to our accessible benches’ weather-resistant recycled plastic material.

This thoughtful approach ensures that Wells Cole Community Centre will have a tidy, accessible, and enjoyable outdoor space all year round, without adding the burden of maintenance on volunteers or staff. It’s a great example of how accessible outdoor furniture and clever landscaping can work hand-in-hand, creating a space that’s both practical and beautiful.

Accessible Benches Built to Last, Whatever the Weather

Our York accessible benches were chosen not just for their appearance, but for their long-lasting durability and sustainability. Unlike traditional timber garden benches, our recycled plastic benches are designed to withstand the elements. They are completely resistant to rot, splintering, and weather-related wear – making them ideal for public spaces like community centres, where reliability and longevity are essential.

Rain or shine, our recycled plastic benches will continue to provide safe, comfortable seating for years to come – without the need for regular maintenance or treatment.

More Than Just Seating

Outdoor spaces such as the garden at Wells Cole Community Centre are critical for socialisation, providing opportunities for rest, conversation, and connection.

The official opening of the garden was held during a community coffee morning on 13th April 2026, with attendees including representatives from the Trust, District and Parish councils, as well as residents excited to enjoy the space once again.

Complete with a red ribbon-cutting ceremony, everyone attending enjoyed tea, coffee, cake, and friendly chat – the perfect way to enjoy the Spring sunshine.

We’re incredibly pleased to see a real-life example of what well-designed, accessible outdoor furniture can help facilitate.

How We Support Community-Led Projects

This project is a testament to what can happen when communities come together with a shared vision for an accessible community space.

We’re honoured that our accessible benches could play a small part in bringing that vision to life.

If you’re planning a similar project – whether it’s a community garden, park, or outdoor seating area – our range of recycled plastic benches, picnic tables, and other accessible outdoor furniture is designed to support spaces that are inclusive, durable, and built for everyday use.

Because everyone deserves a place to sit, rest, and feel part of the community.

Thank you to local resident Margaret for getting in touch with her story and sharing photos from the coffee morning event.
